People ask us this all the time, usually over WhatsApp at 11pm Bangkok time, usually three days before they fly in: "We've only got one day for a jet ski tour in Phuket — which route should we book?"
For four years, we gave a polite, hedging answer. We were trying to be even-handed about routes that are demonstrably not equal. Time to stop. This is the honest ranking — based on which routes we'd send our own friends and family on, and which ones we run because there's a market for them, but wouldn't be our first pick.
The ranking, top to bottom
First, the boring facts that apply to all of them. There are three routes. Each one is 4 hours, runs daily at 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and is closed on Saturdays (we need one day to fix things). Every tour includes the jet ski, fuel, a guide, life jacket, lunch, health insurance and a free hotel transfer from Patong, Karon, Kata or Kathu. What none of them include is insurance on the jet ski itself — if you scratch it, that's on you, on any route, so ride like the machine is yours.
1. 8-Point Grand Tour (Flagship). 8 stops across Phang Nga Bay, 4 hours, the most scenery per minute of anything we run. Yamaha VX 1,800cc or Sea-Doo GTI Pro 130 at ฿6,900 (฿2,000 deposit), or the Yamaha FX 1,900 SC with built-in speakers at ฿10,000 (฿3,500 deposit). This is the route we'd book if we were tourists ourselves. There's no contest. Book at least 12 hours ahead.
2. Elephant Route. 8 points including a stop at an elephant camp. The only Phuket jet ski tour with a land-side animal encounter. Sea-Doo GTI Pro 130 only, ฿6,900, ฿2,500 deposit. Best for families and animal lovers. One catch: the camp needs notice, so this route must be booked at least 2 days (48 hours) ahead. "Tomorrow morning?" is a no.
3. Monkey Island Route. 7 points, the classic. Monkey Island, Naka Yai, the mangroves. Yamaha VX-C 1,100cc at ฿6,500, or the Sea-Doo GTI Pro 130 or Yamaha VX 1,800cc at ฿6,900 — ฿2,000 deposit on any of them. Best for first-timers: one fewer stop, more time to get comfortable, and the cheapest machine in the fleet is perfectly adequate. Book at least 12 hours ahead.
Third place isn't an insult, by the way. With only three routes, last place still gets you monkeys, islands and lunch.
If you only have one day in Phuket, book the 8-Point Grand Tour. If you have two days, do Monkey Island as the warm-up and the Grand Tour as the main event. If you have three, add Elephant.
By traveller type
- First-time rider, nervous. Monkey Island Route, morning session. Shorter route, calmer water, time to acclimatise before any group photo gets taken.
- Couples, want a memorable day. 8-Point Grand Tour or Elephant. Both deliver a story you'll tell at dinners for two years.
- Families and animal lovers. Elephant Route, kid riding pillion behind a parent. Monkeys on the water, elephants on land — it's the one the kids talk about on the flight home. Just remember the 48-hour booking rule.
- Adrenaline junkies. 8-Point Grand Tour on the Yamaha FX 1,900 SC. The supercharged flagship is the only jet ski in our fleet that genuinely rewards aggressive riding — and it has speakers, so you can pick your own soundtrack.
- On a budget. Monkey Island on the Yamaha VX-C 1,100. ฿6,500 is the cheapest way onto the water with us, and nobody at lunch will know.
Things people get wrong about the ranking
Monkey Island is not "the boring one". It's one stop shorter, which on a first ride is a feature, not a bug. If you've never sat on a jet ski, an extra half hour of confidence beats an extra island you were too tense to enjoy.
Insurance means health insurance. Every route includes health insurance for riders. The jet ski itself is not insured on any tour — scratches and dents are on you, so listen to the guide in the briefing.
Elephant Route doesn't include riding the elephants. The camp we visit doesn't offer rides — only walking and feeding. Read our Elephant Route guide for context on why.
The fast answer
One day, no other constraints: 8-Point Grand Tour on the Yamaha VX 1,800 or Sea-Doo at ฿6,900. Want to show off? FX 1,900 at ฿10,000. First time and nervous? Monkey Island on the VX-C 1,100 — save ฿400, it's enough machine for any beginner. Kids or elephant fans? Elephant Route, booked two days out.
All three book online at our booking page with a deposit by card through Stripe. Full route details are on the Phuket tours page.
That's the honest answer the WhatsApp message at 11pm Bangkok time is looking for.
